Will Twitter let users pay for verified accounts?

Would you pay for that little blue checkmark next to your Twitter handle?

According to tech investor Jason Calacanis, users may soon get the opportunity to do that. On Friday, Calacanis appeared on CNBC's Halftime Report and claimed the social network is set to introduce verification for all — for a price.

"For $1 a year or something like that," Calacanis said, users will soon be able pay for a blue checkmark to appear on their accounts.

Twitter already offers verified accounts, but reserves the distinction for select users — generally people in the public eye who might have prank accounts in their name ...

Peering through the window at an evolving programmatic landscape

An industry that's evolving comes with it many other evolutions as well — how we think and talk about things, how solve new problems, how we solve old problems, and how sometimes it's preferred to just stick to what you do best. Here's a roundup of headlines from this week that covers changing terminology and strategies and a company changing its strategy and focus. There's also a bit on what we can learn from windows (the real ones, not the OS).

  • The New Premium: How Programmatic Changes The Way Advertisers Value Inventory (AdExchanger) – As any industry grows and evolves, so does its terminology. In terms of the online advertising industry, one of those evolving terms is “premium inventory.” Previously tied to channel and content type, the term is more often being used in reference to the audience sitting in front of those impressions.
  • How Rampant is Online Ad Fraud? (Wall Street Journal) – comScore released data this week that indicates a majority (but not all) of the online fraud is tied to the bottom 20 percent of ad campaigns. This would seem to support the theory of fraud being at least somewhat avoidable if you work with the right partners.
  • SAY Media Unloads Its Websites to Focus on Tech (AdWeek) – Being a publisher isn't easy. Being a tech company isn't easy. Being both is proving to be pretty impossible. Focus on what you want to do, and work with trusted partners for the rest.

Smartphone attachment brings cheap HIV tests to remote areas

There are gizmos that let your smartphone read credit cards, sync with your fitness wristband and even function as a TV remote control. Now you can add "run an HIV test" to the list.

A device invented by biomedical engineers at Columbia University turns a smartphone into a lab that can test human blood for the virus that causes AIDS or the bacteria that cause syphilis. The device is a dongle that attaches to the headphone jack, and requires no separate batteries. An app on the phone reads the results.

The dongle contains a lab on a chip. It consists of a one-time-use cassette — which has tiny channels as thin as a human hair — and a pump, which is operated by a mechanical button and draws blood from an inlet through the channels. ...

Why Twitter struck a deal with Google

During Twitter's fourth quarter earnings on Thursday, CEO Dick Costolo confirmed the reports: Twitter and Google are partners once again.

Costolo declined to share many details about the deal, which was widely reported on Wednesday. That left plenty of unanswered questions, such as how much Twitter stands to make from the deal and what kind of data would be shared.

"The way we think about the Google deal is distinct," Costolo said on the analyst call, adding it was all about "eyeballs."

Beyond that, Costolo simply said that it would be "several months" before we'd start to see any Google search results that take advantage of the Twitter deal. ...
